Still a relatively new product marketed as protection against the fraud of Identity Theft, it often won’t replace stolen money or cover unauthorized charges. You may have seen some television ads that focus on helping “re-establish credit.” This is different than covering an actual loss.

Some policies are “low value” because they only cover items like long-distance charges, registered mail, notarizing documents, or loan application fees for theft-related losses. Others only cover hard-to-prove expenses, such as lost wages from taking time off work to handle Identity Theft.

Review your Homeowners Insurance policy—it may already include Identity Theft provisions.
